Iran’s Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh says natural gas will be available free of change to households with low usage as part of a government plan to make energy consumption more efficient. “Although this scheme would lead to lower revenues but what matters more to us is creating a balance in supply and demand which would come out of this scheme,” said Zanganeh in a meeting with senior government officials on Saturday.

Iran has one of the world’s largest networks of natural gas for household consumption.

Pipelines reached remote regions in the country’s southeast this year while the government has accelerated plans to link even small villages to the grid.

Household consumption in Iran normally reaches peaks of more than 600 million cubic meters per day in cold winter months while output is nearing 1 billion cubic meters a day with the planned rollout of new gas rigs in the South Pars, the world’s largest gas filed located in the Persian Gulf which is shared between Iran and Qatar.

Growing gas usage, especially in the household sector, has raised concerns that Iran may find it difficult in several years’ time to provide a stable supply of natural gas to households.

Zanganeh said that the government is studying a plan to offer major discounts to household customers who reduce their consumption by 10 percent.

He said those customers will enjoy discounts of up to 30 percent in the price of the gas they consume.

The minister also said the discounts would mean that around a third of all household customers would be supplied by free-of-charge natural gas
