On Wednesday night groups of protesters took to the streets in an attempt to block roads.

The demonstrations came after an announcement by the Lebanese Presidential Office that compulsory consultations with parliamentary blocs to name a new Prime Minister-designate will be held on Monday. The protests died down Thursday, yet the opposition from some protesters was not to the consultations per se; they were against a potential candidate whom most political groups seem to have agreed upon: Samir Khatib.  They say Khatib is too close to the political elite.

Samir Khatib is a prominent businessman who is considered a political newcomer and reportedly has good relations with all parties in Lebanon.

However, analysts believe the real obstacle is that there needs to be true consensus and the main blessing should especially be from caretaker PM Saad Hariri.

With the possible agreement on the nomination of Khatib, the businessman is expected to have some 89 votes and a guaranteed win.

The nomination of Samir Khatib for the post of prime minister has been met with some opposition.

However, many Lebanese are willing to give the new government an opportunity to prove itself, especially if it includes ministers with clean slate
