The Weekly: Our most important stories from last week
Yemen-Press The Weekly is a brief look back at the most consequential news from last week with a view to putting them in context.

Published every Monday, The Weekly retells each of the selected stories, adds a little perspective, and gives directions as to where things may be headed. Through the week ending February 16, 2020, we have been reporting on the Saudi-led war on Yemen, the primary elections in the United States, and the coronavirus outbreak in China.

[1] An episode in Yemen war reveals Saudi-led coalition’s colossal incompetence On Friday, February 14, 2020, Yemen’s Houthis shot down a Tornado fighter jet operated by the invading Saudi-led coalition in the country’s northern skies.

The Houthis, who have been running Yemen’s state affairs since 2015, targeted the plane with a surface-to-air missile in Jawf Province and then published footage of both the shooting-down and the wreckage of the plane.

The fate of the plane’s two pilots, who reportedly ejected before the plane crashed onto the ground, was unclear.

The coalition then launched strikes in Jawf in attempted retaliation, killing over 30 civilians in what the United Nations (UN) described as “shocking.” The downing and the deadly strikes underscore a fact about the Saudi-led coalition that, although it has been established, is sometimes buried under the reports of strikes and counterstrikes that have now become a daily routine: even though it outdoes the Houthis in terms of qualitative and quantitative military power, the Saudi-led coalition has failed in Yemen spectacularly.

The coalition has blockaded impoverished Yemen, is effectively in control of its skies, and receives weapons — including fighter jets — and intelligence support from the United States in the war on the country.

It also almost invariably attempts to hit the Houthis from the air.

Yet, none of that has enabled the Saudi Arabian-led aggressors to achieve victory against the Houthis, who are tribal fighters mostly with basic weaponry.

The coalition’s reliance first and foremost on aerial strikes also highlights the coalition’s military incompetence.

Saudi pilots, trained by the West to fly Western-made warplanes toward targets acquired by Western intelligence, are so timid that they fly their aircraft from very high altitudes for fear of ground fire, often hitting civilian targets as a result, according to US pilots who have worked with them.

On Saturday, a day after the strike that killed over 30 civilians, the Saudi-led coalition said it was investigating the possibility of “collateral damage.” [2] Joe Biden, once Democrats’ best chance to win back White House, losing primary elections On Tuesday, February 11, 2020, Senator Bernie Sanders was declared the winner of the primary elections in the US state of New Hampshire, the second such elections to have been held in the United States so far.

One of his rivals, former Vice-President Joe Biden, came in a distant fifth.

(AFP photo)e Mr Biden, who has touted his bridge-building capacity to accomplish bipartisan work, was long the front runner in opinion polls and a strong contender for the Democratic ticket for presidency.

His weak showings in the New Hampshire primaries, and the Iowa primaries before them, as well as recent campaign finance strains have raised serious questions about his continued campaign.

Furthermore, the unexpected rise of Mr Sanders, a self-proclaimed “democratic socialist” whose last campaign for presidency was considered a long shot and failed in 2016, has prompted concern among Democratic voters, who desperately seek a unifying candidate in a fractured Democratic field to beat Mr Trump in the 2020 presidential race.

Despite having won Iowa and New Hampshire, Mr Sanders himself has only appealed to young, progressive voters, and not the wider Democratic base.

[3] China virus outbreak slowing down On Sunday, February 16, 2020, and for the first time since a novel coronavirus outbreak started in China last December, infection cases slowed down, prompting cautious optimism that the epidemic may be on the decline.

The number of new infection cases of the virus, recently named by the World Health Organization (WHO) “COVID-19,” dropped for a third consecutive day on Sunday, and the number of deaths stayed level at 139 with that of Saturday.
