Press TV, Caracas The United Nations has delivered a 90-ton shipment of much-needed medical aid to Venezuela to reinforce the country’s healthcare system amid the coronavirus outbreak in the Latin American country. The shipment includes a variety of personal protective equipment for health workers as well as oxygen concentrators, pediatric beds and hygiene kits.

The donations make up the first phase of the response to the pandemic and will go to help the most vulnerable at designated hospitals, outpatient clinics and child development centers.

Venezuelan authorities have welcomed the move by the United Nations, and stressed the importance of such assistance while the country is targeted by US sanctions that impede the importation of many medical supplies.

Likewise, medical experts say the international contributions are vital to contain the virus outbreak.

Nonetheless, the opposition continues to criticize the government’s handling of the outbreak.

However, many Venezuelans believe Washington is refusing to do the least it can do to help the nation fight the deadly virus which is lifting the sanctions.

The government of President Nicolas Maduro has put in place a nationwide quarantine, suspended school and university programs and closed borders in a bid to slow down the spread of the virus.

The Coronavirus pandemic continues to wreak havoc across the world these days, particularly in the US and Europe.

Experts in Venezuela say the country needs to put all its efforts into flattening the curve and slowing things down.
