Prominent Bahraini psychotherapist Dr Sharifa Swar was hospitalized last week following a severe car accident, which left her with a broken hand and twisted ankle.

In a series of posts on social media shortly after the crash, Swar explained that she was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle.

She said she was ‘close to dying’ after the vehicle came out of a curve driving way above the speed limit.

The driver of that vehicle was reportedly identified as a member of the Bahrain Defense Force, giving rise to speculation that foul play may have been involved.

Dr Swar is currently standing trial for defamation and spreading false news.

A verdict in the case is expected later this month.

The trial comes after the doctor live streamed a conversation between herself and a school student back in March, which threw the spotlight on the use and distribution of prescription drugs in Bahraini schools.

The student alleged that she was a victim of a far more elaborate criminal network that was overseen by gangs.

For her part, Dr Swar suggested that the case involves cover-ups and corrupt state officials.

The public outrage over the claims prompted authorities to launch an investigation.

But Bahrain’s Public Prosecution eventually set its sights on Dr Swar, arguing that she should have contacted the proper authorities instead of going public with the information.
